Hip Hop artist NXICON talks Acronyms, Latest Music, & Challenges in an Exclusive Interview w/ Mistah Wilson

"It's always been me on the grind and hustle 100% believing in me. Sometimes, that's all you have and I've adjusted and been cool with that."

Mistah Wilson: Yo, NXICON! Thanks for coming thru for this exclusive interview with thawilsonblock magazine! Great to have you here!

NXICON: Thanks for having me! It's an extreme honor when a magazine such THAWILSONBLOCK Magazine takes notice of you and wants to interview you! I appreciate the opportunity. I'm originally from Grand rapids, Michigan and moved to Atlanta because the atmosphere for my music wasn't what I needed in order to strive in Grand Rapids. I had been in a few groups at the time but it always seemed to dwindle down to myself and a DJ. The three main ones were DJ BKO out of Lansing, DJ Mikey Mike of the Other Bros. and DJ Rose both out of Grand Rapids, but I was more heavily influenced by the West Coast style of rap where everyone else was more East Coast. I was under contract with an independent label, KJ Records but due to discrepancies with the contract, I had to opt out and that gave me my opportunity to explore new territories. I began self producing my own releasing my own projects and am currently up to my 7th independent release that's currently untitled.Being an independent artist has opened so many doors and opportunities for me. I push for any and every artist to be independent! It's a risk but it's well worth it! I've been blessed to have my music featured on 10 compilations, a jewelry store overseas, a web series "UNDERCOVER DETECTIVE" by April Whitaker and an independent film, "THE LIST" by Prime Factor Films. My current release was called "YOUNG GOD". I started my own production company called KUUNTAAR MUSIC which is the parent company for my own label ANX RECORDS and MEDIANTIX Film and Photography. I'm also and actor of both stage and film and an author of 3 novels. So I stay busy and involved in as many things as possible to get my name and brand out there. I'm currently in the process of putting together my first short film to which I'm also producing the music for as well. Music has been my therapy and I love the whole process from beginning to end.

Mistah Wilson: First off, I want to talk about the name. What is NXICON an acronym for and what message are you trying to send with it?
NXICON: You're the first person to ask me that...lol....NXICON is definitely an acronym. It stands for No eXcuses I Can Overcome Negativity. I came up in the streets of Lansing and Grand Rapids and saw a lot, did a lot. Risked a lot. I had a lot of negativity not only from those streets but from people in my life that I had to overcome to be the person that I am. We all go through and some of us give in to the negativity. I'm a testament that anything negative in your life doesn't have to own and/or control you. You can take that energy and refocus into something positive but that had to start within me. I had to block out the naysayers and haters to believe in me first and foremost. Black males hear how bad, how weak, how sorry we are all the time. We're not going to amount to anything but being criminals and inmates. I almost took the bait. Gave up. Gave in to social pressure and the hateful atmosphere but then the music came to me and gave me a voice. A feeling that I could not only change my thoughts but the thoughts of others. We have to CHOOSE to go against the grain and stand up to make a difference. NO EXCUSES. Any negativity can be overcome if we start with ourselves first and listen to the voice in our heads telling us that we're important even if we don't hear it from anyone else. Prayer also works.

Mistah Wilson: How was life, and the local music scene, like growing up in Grand Rapids, Michigan?
NXICON: Life was life in Michigan as with any other place. I just felt that I wasn't growing as an individual or as an artist. I did have some wonderful opportunities but they just weren't what I felt was needed. Considering Grand Rapids was the home of DeBarge, this group called EURO-K, Iceman Ja and Robert S. You would have thought that it would be booming music-wise but it just wasn't the environment for me. Plus the life that I was living at the time was getting to me and I really needed to escape. I was heavy into the dark side. Running around with gangsters and the like.  I felt like it was either hell or a jail cell and I wasn't looking for either one. So I packed up and moved to Atlanta.

Mistah Wilson: Let's talk music! You've already have a firm body of work. Tell us about some of your favorite albums and the theme behind them...
NXICON: I would say that my favorite was "IS U DOWN" because that was written specifically for an online label. And the title was because there were so many people claiming that they had my back and that were down for me but their actions and mannerisms said otherwise. They all have the same mantra that I've had since the beginning "DO OR DIE". That's how I live. either I'm down for you or I'm not. I can't and won't fake it. I expect the same and if I have to ask "IS U DOWN?" then I have to cut you loose. Loyalty is everything to and with me. All of my projects have titles that depict what I'm feeling at the time except for "THE MIXTAPE" that was just something fun to do. "REQUIEM" was because a certain persona of mine had to be let go and buried for NXICON to rise up. "SCORPIO" because I'm a Scorpio and I was feeling it strong at the time. "TRUST ISSUE" because I felt I had no one in my corner. "YOUNG GOD" because I was coming into my own and my latest "SOLJAH" because it's time for us that "claim" that we're SOLJAHS to raise up and take our positions for US. Our people. Our Future. Our Legacy.

Mistah Wilson: Where do you pull inspiration from when writing new songs?
NXICON: Lately, it's been from personal things going on in my life. Nothing makes a better song that your own personal trials and tribulations. I also draw from everyday life. Thing s that I hear on the news or on the internet. especially when it has to do with Black people and the fact that we're dying and disappearing at an alarming rate and no one seems to bat an eye. 2Pac and so many others spoke about this and were effectively assassinated for saying so. Now it's time for US to speak on it. Not "mumble" and whisper about it but put it out in the open. The only that things are going to change with and for Black people in Amerikkka is for it to START with Black People in Amerikkka. Our backs are against the wall and it's time to come off of it.

Mistah Wilson: Who are some key artists and musicians you listened to growing up that influenced the artist you are today?
NXICON: I've grown up listening to everything and anything. Key artists tho were Public Enemy, X-Clan, NWA, Ice Cube, of course 2Pac, BDP, who I was extremely honored to have met and spoke with KRS-ONE one day in Atlanta. He was the biggest influence in music.

Mistah Wilson: Who are some artists you collaborated with and would like to work with in the near future?
NXICON: I haven't had the opportunity to collaborate with any but I would love to collab with T.I, Ice Cube, Dr. Dre any artist that has a platform of positivity and is willing to stand up against oppression and brutality.

Mistah Wilson: What are some challenges and rewards you've encountered along your journey as an artist?
NXICON: My biggest challenge was having no support base like so many others. It's always been me on the grind and hustle 100% believing in me. Sometimes, that's all you have and I've adjusted and been cool with that. The people will come when it's time. In the meantime, my rewards have been many. Being in this magazine for one! But I've had my music featured in stores overseas, I've had them used in movies and in a web-series, radio play the list goes on. I'm humbled and honored by each of them because NONE of you have to give me this opportunity. But you did. And anyone that doesn't understand that doesn't deserve attention given. Everyday in this industry is a challenge but if you want the prize, then you have to go through the challenges. At the end it will be worth it.

Mistah Wilson: Where can people find and follow you online?
NXICON: I am on Facebook, Instagram, Holonis you name it. Everything is NXICON. All you have to do is type it in the search engine...lol

Mistah Wilson: Yo, NXICON! It's been an honor having you here with us for this exclusive interview with thawilsonblock. If you have any shout outs you wanna drop, let's hear it!
NXICON: I appreciate the opportunity and the honor. My shoutouts would be to Tami Baily, DJ Mikey Mike and Frankie J, The Other Bros., DJ BKO, DJ Rose, Jaquetta quashie and Peace Delightful Treats,my son William, his moms Cindy, The Davis and the Walker family and anyone else that's always followed me if it wasn't for them, there would be no me!

Read "Rebirth" by Maya Huyana (Album Review by Jhantu Randall)

Read More by Jhantu Randall

In a world that is under the spell of ratchet decadence where shock value is a profitable selling strategy, sincere creativity tends to be overshadowed far too often. Not to say there aren’t other options available, for every Cardi B a Rhapsody or Snow Tha Product exists, so to say there’s no good music is disingenuous. There’s plenty of undiscovered talent out there and thanks to streaming it’s widely available, you just have to be willing to search for it.

It’s with this in mind that I found myself giving a listen to an artist I had never heard of, Maya Huyuna. Something about the simplicity of her Rebirth cover just drew me in. There was a vulnerability and a strong confidence that came across as beautiful. Upon the first listen of Rebirth, it is clear that this woman has something to say and she won’t stop until she’s heard!

Between jazzy, neo soul sounding beats and rhythms and a raw delivery fused with melodic vocals, there’s no way to box her in when it comes to genre. While that may be seen as a challenge it’s precisely that which holds my attention. The anticipation of wondering what’s coming next is a welcomed feeling. Without trying to classify what she does, if I had to describe her in any sort of way I’d say she strikes a sound that draws from Lauren Hill and fuses it with the poetry of Gil Scott Heron. This is most evident on the opening track, “Rebirth” where Maya starts with a rhythmic flow that get accompanied by a fuller singing voice about 20 second in.

“Inner City Dialogue” is one of my favorite tracks as it just chills you out and allows you to take in the moment as you reflect on what it took to get you there. Painting pictures with her words she creates images that play in your mind with intricate cinematography. “Come Home (Dreamin’)” gives vibes of coming home after a long day to reconnect with a woman who is celebrating that natural essence. Invoking imagery of feeling the best parts of true love. “Maya’s Jam” is pure creativity constructed to a track without doing too much, the natural feeling of it all makes it a track that deserves a repeated listen. “Say Yeah/The Calm” is a track I would play on a carefree summer day as the sun is beginning to set just beyond the horizon. It’s the perfect transition into “Soul food” which accompanies a drive at dusk with the windows down as you feel a warm summers breeze. “One of Us” is a modern take on “What if God was one of Us” which is a good way to bring it down while at the same time ending the album on a positive note.

My only real complaint about Rebirth is its length. At only 7 tracks all under 5 minutes, it left me wanting more to feel fully complete. On the flip side it’s definitely lead me to wanting more music from Maya Huyuna in the near future. Do yourself a favor and give Rebirth a listen as you bring in Summer as its a slow burn that will ultimately stick with you for some time.

"XXI GOLD" Album Review written by Natalee Gilbert

Listen on Soundcloud

Dimmed lights, head thumping music & liquor that seems to be pouring from the ceiling are the components of a lively party but what happens when it starts to consume your reality on a daily basis? Luckily, XXI Gold gives you the answers and more in his new album “XXI Gold”.

He gets deep and personal about his own battles and also helps the listener envision the different situations that happen during a youthful night of partying which mostly contains high energy and (sometimes) off-the-rail antics.

XXI Gold starts off with Therapy, where the beat contains a range of triple stacked synths, modern snaps and an indescribable hum that seems to gravitate towards your cerebral cortex. In this track, XXI Gold refers to the liquor and the drugs as a “she” that he just can’t get enough of. “She” has become so addicting to him that he can’t seem to get enough as he relates the after-affect of these two components as his “therapy”… after all XXI Gold is battling with some demons so this is his way to fight them off.

As Therapyslowly fades out, the second track Goldensets the perfect mood for a high strung lust that seems to pulls him and a seductive woman to the bathroom due to the “gold chains, gold teeth, gold chains and gold drinks”. The beat itself is pulsating, mixing a bit of electronic dance and rap. As he spits about being in the heat of the moment, the listener too can reminisce about their own wild nights when they hooked up with another.

“We sip slow, we drive fast, we pray to god we never crash,” that’s what 1977 splurges in your ear strings in the first few bars. Built up over some trancy piano keys and spiraling synths and soft beaten drums, 1977 speaks on how booze and kush makes him feel alive and warm inside. He speaks as if he is driving with these things in his system, but don’t mistake it as something he does (XXI Gold is just describing this experience from the perspective of someone who’s under the influence and is crushing on the road.)

Drunk Sex is narrated in the perspective of two drunk people who are about to turn the lights down and get between the sheets in the midst of the party going on. “We became slaves to a bone that’s right,” is one of the lines that XXI smoothly lays on the track as the sultry, zooning beat and echoes of a hazy lady saying “Drunk Sex”, backdrops. He speaks once again on an important issue about intoxication and sex while he also speaks on what he is dealing with.

Coupled with smoothness hazy speech and once again triple stacked synths, California Dreamin’ takes the listener to the sunny state that’s filled with a lavish of dining, kicking back and lovely ladies.

As quoted by Xavier in P.I.F.F. Magazine, “In its own unique way, it pays tribute to the fallen legends and makes you feel like Cali is the best place to be in the entire world.” XXI Gold is in fact backing it up by speaking on his own experience. He’s living his best life and he’s not afraid to speak on it.

Placing as the 6th track, SHE speaks about how this lady only “wants him just to f*ck him” and now he’s grateful. XXI Gold uses a good amount of robotic tone and auto tune that keeps the listeners blood flowing. He also induces exuberance a twist of snares, drums and 808s to keep it even more interesting.

Diamondsthen splashes in the mix, gravitating the listener with tranquility and lucidness. As XXI Gold goes bar for bar with himself at a fast pace, he partners up with a female that has a soft, melodic. What XXI Gold talks about in most of the song is about being carefree and enjoying what life has to offer.

Closing out XXI GOLD, Keep the HighsLow turns things up once again and adds the sweet touch to a memorable ending. XXI Gold is assisted by hypotonic droned voices as he talks about a women that has him stuck in love with the Saturday night clutched to his being. From the line “Fuck love when you get this high. In your eyes I touch your eyes” you can tell that he’s living his nights like it’s his last and he’s not ashamed of having a little fun, of being himself.

To conclude, XXI GOLD is an album that knows how to keep one on its toes with its upbeat and hypnotic production. A storyteller in the MC form, XXI Gold is able to let others picture his words and because of that…notoriety is in his reach.

Just remember you only live one life.

Read "Victory Lap" by Nipsey Hussle (Album Review by Jhantu Randall)

Read More by Jhantu Randall
It’s been 19 days since the world became aware of a rapper who went by the name of Nipsey Hussle, a man who was gunned down in front of his own store, Marathon on Crenshaw and Slauson. Born Ermias Joseph Asghedom on August 15, 1985 he made quite an impact in the LA area in just 33 short years. Since his passing and publicly viewed funeral, news of all his good deeds, investments and visions have come to the general public's attention showing the image of a man whose essence left an impact on the world at large. By focusing on community investment, business ownership and self reliance which was funded largely by a rap career that became supplemental income, Nipsey was showing the blueprint of another way to build.

In the world of Hip-Hop, Nipsey always seemed to be mentioned among the class of freshman faces but the man had been putting out mixtapes since early 2005, so although Victory lap was officially his debut album he had an established following due to the series of mixtapes. This worked to Nipsey’s advantage as he had time to truly take his time and perfect his craft, Victory Lap wasn’t just Nipsey’s debut album, it was ultimately is strongest statement!

After his passing, much of Victory Lap comes off as both prophetic and quite reflective. A well deserved session that celebrates a life lived to the fullest and translated to wax for countless fans to hear. Kicking off with the self titled single “Victory Lap” featuring Stacy Barthe the song fuses a tropical sound with hard hitting lyrics where Nip speaks upon the moments that allowed him to get to this point. Shooting the video at the Mayan Ruins in Tulum, the visuals connect to you in a way that immortalizes Nipsey in a time capsule of his own creation.

The entire album is crafted so well that the fact that it didn’t win the Grammy for album of the year almost feels like an insult but at the same time gave it a pathway to legendary status as a result. Every track shows off Nipsey’s uniqueness and highlighted what made him stand out while also shining a spotlight on the thoughts of a man who seemed to be loved and respected by anyone and everyone he’d ever come across. While there are no fillers on this album, standouts include “Dedication” featuring Kendrick Lamar who openly gave Nipsey his flowers in life and showed it in the verse. A verse that actually accompanied as well as played off Nipsey’s quite well. “Key 2 the City” featuring Teeflii is one that’ll grab your ear off top but it’s “Hussle and Motivate” and “Grinding all my Life” that have become must listens whenever you find yourself searching for a way to reignite a fire within yourself. “Real Big” featuring the heavenly voice of Marsha Ambrosius is a track that I always find myself returning to. The combination of the 2 capture your attention right away and while the song itself spans over 15 minutes long, by the end it still feels too short once it transitions into”Double Up” Featuring Dom Kennedy and then to the final track, “Right Hand To God” which again sounds eerily prophetic considering all that has occurred.

After listening to Victory lap it left me with a odd mix of emotions. Honestly I had always been aware of who Nipsey was, I had listened to a few of his early mixtapes, but this album gave me hope for the future of the genre as Nipsey highlighted honor, intelligence, and growth in a world that promotes bad habits and simplistic, destructive behavior. I actually wish I had been a bigger fan sooner as I always pushed his philanthropic pursuits whenever I was made aware of them. Regardless, Nipsey Hussle’s Victory lap is a fitting title for a man who left us all too soon but now has added his name to a group of artists that are forever immortalized!
