Lowkey Continues to Provide a Soundtrack to the Struggle (Album Review by Jhantu Randall)

Let’s be honest, if I said conscious rapper or political hip-hop, a half Iraqi half English man would be the last thing that would come to your mind. I bring this up not only to inform you of an artist who is undoubtedly one of the sharpest minds and arguably one of the most vicious on the mic. Ultimately, with all that talent he’s the best you’ve never heard of. Becoming a fan of this man back when I first heard him in 2011, I was intrigued by the brashness of his lyrics. First hearing him on a song called “Voice of the Voiceless” with Immortal Technique, I was shocked and held in awe when I heard his first lines, “From the West 10 to the West Bank, I write righteous rhymes in my right as I wrestle the devil with my left hand. Never worked for a Zionist, Never been a yes man, My art is like Rembrandt painting pictures of death camps.” For someone to even address Palestine or focus on issues and histories spanning Africa through the middle east and even touching on south Asia, Australi...

Stream & Purchase "Free Me" album by JP Bimeni & The Black Belts (Soul)

On his debut album Free Me, Burundian-born JP Bimeni astonishes with a voice that recalls Otis Redding in his prime whilst resonating with the soul of Africa. A refugee who’s been living in London since the early 2000s, Bimeni sings songs of love and loss, hope and fear, with a conviction that comes from the extraordinary experiences life has thrown at him. A descendant of the Burundian royal family, Bimeni fled Burundi aged 15 during the 1993 civil war. Following three attempts on his life, he was given refugee status and fled to the UK where he’s remained ever since. With it’s classic 60s-sounding Motown and Stax-inspired grooves the album was written by Eduardo Martínez and songwriter Marc Ibarz, Lucas Duplá and Bimeni imbues these tales of love and loss with his tragic experiences making ‘Free Me’ a deep soul soundtrack to his pained life: “When I sing I feel like I’m cleansing myself: music is a way for me to forget”. On “Free Me” tough funk jams segue into deep southern soul and...

Meet Pop/Rock Singer "Mahaya" from Toronto, Ontario

Follow Mahaya on Instagram Born in Iran, Mahaya struggled with cultural beliefs that hindered her real dreams of becoming a singer and performer. Performing in any kind of way is prohibited and against the law for women so all she could do at that time was close her eyes and imagine herself on a stage. As she grew up, she would listen to idols like Aretha Franklin, Beyoncé, Celine Dion, and Christina Aguilera. For the love of music, she started learning English to be able to cover their songs and slowly learned to write her own songs in Persian ,English and later in French. She eventually was able to convince the principal of her high school to let her have a concert for girls and it was through this that she realized that music is the only career she wanted to pursue in her life no matter what. Financial struggles growing up caused her to wait until she turned 18 and was able to work to afford music lessons herself. She attended Conservatory of Music , studied Music performance and soo...

Meet Hip Hop Musician "Beeto" from Chicago, Illinois

Alberto A. Alvizar or better known for his rapper name "Beeto" was introduced to hip hop at an early age. It wasn't until the age of 18, when he was introduced to his current friends Branden aka bLest and Michael aka Cuatro, that he started to actually write rhymes. He would spend endless hours talking to Branden and Michael about the art of rhyme structure. He would later go on to test his new skills by writing raps on his Facebook post and tagging other friends, who also rapped, to write their raps.

Listen to "Clouds" instrumental album by Apollo Brown on Bandcamp

Clouds is a 27 track instrumental project from Detroit producer Apollo Brown (The Reset, Brown Study, Gas Mask). While most have come to know Apollo's production for its smash mouth, head nodding, grime, Clouds reveals another aspect of his production ability. This complex, mello instrumental album is ideal on a winter afternoon, or as a nightcap to the day. Each track is hypnotic and imaginative. Clouds is a 52 minute instrumental ride, a backdrop for reflection. For some, clouds come to mind when pondering over the definition of being lost in thought. Formed in different sizes, shapes, and colors, set high in the sky or hanging low at arms reach, clouds seem to stir up a type of calm that we all need at times. This album is a collection of instrumentals put together to do just that. Whether to meditate on a certain mood within, or to accompany heavy reflection, Clouds puts forth music to provoke thought.   Clouds by Apollo Brown

Listen to "The Northerner Diaries Symphonic Sketches" by Jeremy Soule on Bandcamp

As a composer and performer, The Northerner Diaries are my virtual orchestral and choir “sketches” as I work towards the completion of my Symphony 1. These recordings represent wild and unfiltered ideas created in the same vein as concept art you might see from an artist prior to the commencement of an oil painting. At this stage, I have not paid any attention to structural and compositional forms as abstraction from “ginnung” or the “mighty void” is never a predictable process.   href ="http:// jeremysoule . bandcamp .com/album/the-northerner-diaries-symphonic-sketches">The Northerner Diaries Symphonic Sketches by Jeremy Soule
