W Hotels Launches Its Own Record Label — Introducing ‘W Records’

Article by Ashley King Higher-end hotels are a tricky business, with moneyed clientele responding to lots of finer touches. So how about a custom-crafted vinyl LP from an artist sponsored by the hotel itself? Who also happens to be playing in the lounge at 8? Introducing W Records, a brand-new direction for guest retention. Accordingly, W’s new label will support artists through every step of development, according to details shared Wednesday (October 3rd) with DMN. That includes providing space for recording, scouting video shooting locales, and supplying mixing and mastering expertise. They’ll even handle distribution chores (or at least find the right partner). Tracks will be recorded at ‘W Sound Suites’ and will be available both digitally and through limited-edition vinyl runs. W Hotels has suites in Hollywood, Barcelona, Bali, and Seattle for artists to take advantage of their studios. Read more...

Why You Should Automate Emails to Your Music Fans

By Cheryl B. Engelhardt Email Automation: The Basic Stuff Musicians Need To Know Email automation sounds like some futuristic, robotic way of accessing email in your car or something. But it’s a phrase that has been used in e-commerce, retail, and marketing spaces for over a decade. And there’s a reason for that. Unfortunately, the music industry is taking a while to catch on. Enter me. Once I learned about email automation, I found that my relationship to my fans totally changed. I also found that my stress around writing my monthly “newsletter” was lifted. I decided to seriously dig into this concept and went to marketing conferences, got certified as an “Email Marketing Specialist” through Digital Marketer, and have now compiled everything I’ve learned for you. I’m dripping it out through blog posts , web trainings, workbooks , and, my very complete course for those who are truly ready and serious to optimize their email lists 100% in the most effective way. DistroKid Is Offering ‘Mastered for iTunes’ Certification to Unsigned Artists

Apple’s ‘Mastered for iTunes’ classification has mostly been reserved for big labels due to the expense, with very few indie or unsigned artists obtaining the certification for their iTunes downloads or AAC streams. Bucking that trend, DistroKid is now offering unsigned/DIY musicians a way to obtain the Mastered for iTunes certification pretty easily. Distrokid’s new MFiT converter will allow artists to ensure that their tracks conform to Apple’s audio specifications. This converter allows sound engineers to tweak the audio to make sure it sounds right after AAC codec compression. For a fee, DistroKid’s service should help smaller artists reach audiophiles who prefer higher fidelity, whether downloaded or streamed.

23 more Prince albums now available to stream following Sony deal

By Chris Cooke Following the recent deal between the Prince estate and Sony Music, which followed the disastrous deal between the Prince estate and Universal Music, 23 Prince albums have just gone online. Some are available via legitimate digital channels for the first time. The Prince estate, of course, originally did three deals with Universal Music covering the late musician's recordings, songs and merchandise. But the recordings deal fell apart because of confusion over what albums and singles the arrangement actually covered, Prince having entered into a new deal with his original label Warner Music two years before his death. With Universal's recordings deal abandoned, the estate announced a new partnership with Sony Music in June this year . This is the first project under that deal, with 23 catalogue titles going live on the digital platforms alongside a new 'Prince Anthology: 1995-2010' collection. The newly available to stream records are as follows: The Gold ...

How Doctors are using digital photography in rural healthcare

Researchers at the University of British Columbia are using digital photography to track patients' healthcare in rural communities. Professor Kathy Rush of the UBC Okanagan School of Nursing conducted a study with senior atrial fibrillation, or AF, patients living independently in rural communities of less than 7,000 people. AF is a chronic condition that causes an irregular heartbeat, fatigue, dizziness and shortness of breath. For the study, 10 participants of varying stages of health were given digital cameras and were asked to take daily photos and mail them back every two weeks for six months. "You don't always get the full story or picture of what is really going on in their lives," Rush said in a press release. "These photos gave us considerable information about the environmental context of living with an illness in rural communities, where there is limited access to services." The photos showed people waiting for or traveling to appointments along w...
