W Hotels Launches Its Own Record Label — Introducing ‘W Records’

Article by Ashley King Higher-end hotels are a tricky business, with moneyed clientele responding to lots of finer touches. So how about a custom-crafted vinyl LP from an artist sponsored by the hotel itself? Who also happens to be playing in the lounge at 8? Introducing W Records, a brand-new direction for guest retention. Accordingly, W’s new label will support artists through every step of development, according to details shared Wednesday (October 3rd) with DMN. That includes providing space for recording, scouting video shooting locales, and supplying mixing and mastering expertise. They’ll even handle distribution chores (or at least find the right partner). Tracks will be recorded at ‘W Sound Suites’ and will be available both digitally and through limited-edition vinyl runs. W Hotels has suites in Hollywood, Barcelona, Bali, and Seattle for artists to take advantage of their studios. Read more...

How Black Women And Latinas Have Reshaped Pop Music

As part of Turning the Tables, NPR Music compiled a list of 200 greatest songs by women and non-binary artists in the 21st Century. As the list took shape, it became impossible not to notice that the songs in this canon share a common backbone. Many of the songs, and more namely the song's creators, owe their catchy, joyous, triumphant, sexy, strong, aching, resilient ethos to black, Latin and Afro Caribbean musical roots. From streaming to radio, the influence of Latin, Caribbean and R&B music is apparent across all modern genres in the new millennium. To untangle this common thread, NPR Music's Stefanie Fernández and Sidney Madden charted the work of women of color on this list and examined the ways agency and identity have become central in breaking down pop music's barriers. DistroKid Is Offering ‘Mastered for iTunes’ Certification to Unsigned Artists

Apple’s ‘Mastered for iTunes’ classification has mostly been reserved for big labels due to the expense, with very few indie or unsigned artists obtaining the certification for their iTunes downloads or AAC streams. Bucking that trend, DistroKid is now offering unsigned/DIY musicians a way to obtain the Mastered for iTunes certification pretty easily. Distrokid’s new MFiT converter will allow artists to ensure that their tracks conform to Apple’s audio specifications. This converter allows sound engineers to tweak the audio to make sure it sounds right after AAC codec compression. For a fee, DistroKid’s service should help smaller artists reach audiophiles who prefer higher fidelity, whether downloaded or streamed.

Jay-Z & Beyonce's COMBINED Net Worth Is Now Over $1 BILLION

According to a July 12 article, Jay and Bey's combined net worth clocks in at an estimated $1.255 billion. Yes, you've read that correctly. Hip-hop's favorite royal couple are officially Black Bill Gates in the making, with Yonce accounting for $355 million and Hov raking in $900 million. The Carters' massive wealth is attributed to their several streams of income. Beyoncé's pretax annual earnings total approximately $100 million, largely in part due to her ability to to sell more records and draw larger crowds than her husband. The Mrs. Carter Show World Tour grossed $212 million from nearly two million attendees back in 2014. Not to mention, Bey's athleisure clothing line, Ivy Park, sold out almost immediately upon its launch back in April 2016. Jay, on the other hand, is quite the investor. The rap mogul has built his empire by founding his own companies, such as TIDAL , as well as owning equity in other large entities. Back in 2015, the Everything Is Love ra...
